POSE

A new incisionless weight loss surgery procedure

We are pleased to announce that at SurgicalWeightLoss.co.uk we are able to offer an exciting new incisionless weight loss procedure called POSE (Primary Obesity Surgery Endoluminal). The procedure of POSE reduces the capacity of the stomach to help patients feel full faster and achieve better weight loss results with their diet, without major surgery, scars and weeks of recovery time.

The procedure was developed in America and we are pleased to be among the first group to be able to offer the service in the UK.

Patients who have undergone POSE procedure on a Friday can be back at work on Monday with no bandages or pain and in total confidentiality.

What are the potential benefits of an incision-less procedure such as POSE?

POSE is performed inside the stomach through the mouth, with no cuts into the abdomen. By eliminating cuts or incisions into the skin, the procedure can provide important advantages to patients, including minimized pain, a reduced risk of infection and associated complications, shorter hospital stays, no visible external scars and faster recovery times.

How does it work?

The Surgeon uses special instruments passed through the mouth to create folds in the stomach, in order to reduce the amount of food it can hold, so you feel full faster and eat less, allowing you to lose weight. Suturing the stomach and using special tissue anchors to hold the folds in place may also reduce hunger between meals. The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic.

Who is eligible for POSE?

Patients most suited to POSE procedure are those in the lower BMI range of 28 to 40kg/m2.  Potential candidates for POSE will undergo a comprehensive assessment by the multi-disciplinary bariatric team including medical history, as well as nutritional and dietary evaluations in order to determine if they are suitable candidates for POSE.

How long will I need to stay in the hospital?

The consultant will determine the length of hospital stay however; most patients are discharged on the same day of the procedure. In some cases, it may be necessary to keep you overnight for observation.

How quickly will I lose weight?

Following POSE procedure you will begin a very important diet program on the day following the procedure. Most patients usually say they feel less hungry and full faster immediately after the procedure. As you eat less, your body will stop storing excess calories and start using its fat energy supply. As with all diets, the amount of weight loss and the speed at which it is lost will be influenced by how well you follow the diet in conjunction with the exercise guidelines following the procedure.

Is it safe?

The POSE procedure is generally safe.  No major complications have so far been reported following POSE. However, as with any endoscopic procedure, there is risk involved and some patients will experience a temporary sore throat, bloating and nausea following the procedure, these usually settle quickly.

What is the recovery like after POSE procedure?

Most patients will return to normal activity within a few days of their procedure depending on the nature of their work. The consultant will provide specific instructions. In addition, you will be required to follow a post-procedure diet and exercise plan, similar to the regime prescribed following other weight loss surgeries. You will be followed up and monitored regularly by the bariatric team to ensure that you get the most benefit from the POSE procedure.
